mlk photoThe BT Express program is held every Saturday of the month excluding those Saturdays that fall on holidays. Our approach to community service is through service learning. Youth are better served through real life experiences in their community. We believe there is good in all people, however ALL of us, including our youth, are not immune. No one learns from being punished for mistakes and we want to ensure that our young person learn and grow from their experiences. Through service learning, we support lifelong learning, develop leadership capacity, and foster volunteerism. This, in turn, enables our youth to become aware and empathic towards others’ conditions and needs while finding a new way to live.

The courts referred two young people to us who had been accused of snatching an elderly person’s purse. Instead of them picking up trash off the streets for five hours, the BT Express Crew volunteered at a convalescent canhome. The youth were instructed to return the next week with eye glasses. When we arrived at the Convalescent Home, they were instructed to put on their glasses and smear them with Vaseline. Now go about your duties: read to the seniors, serve lunch, swept/mop floors—whatever the facility needed assistance with. When we returned to our headquarters the youth reflected on their experience: “it was cool hanging out with those old people, but I wish we did have to wear those stupid glasses.” Well if that elderly person had all their faculties maybe you would not have gotten away with her purse. Service Learning through Community Service allows our youth to be sensitive to the needs of others and to become resources for the community.

BT Express is always seeking opportunities for youth people to contribute to their communities. We support the community in various ways: Beach Clean Up, Tree Planting, Food Pantries, Graffiti Removal, Street Fair and festival logistics. Our main goal here at BT Express is to help the young people see their value and to guide them back to a place of responsible growth and development. If you have a project for our crew, contact Malik Ali at 415/7753-7690 or mali@successcentersf.org.
